Brooklyn-based musician and DJ Eli “Paperboy” Reed will be making a special guest appearance in the WHUP studios at 4:00 pm on Wednesday, Feb. 3 to spin a set from his extensive vinyl collection of funk, soul, gospel and R&B. Reed, who has been making soul-inspired music since before it was cool and tearing up stages all over the world with his heart-stopping falsetto screams for close to a decade, will be previewing his appearance later that evening at the B-Side Lounge in Carrboro.
From humble beginnings outside of Boston, Reed moved to Clarksdale, Mississippi at age 18 and cut his teeth playing in juke joints all over the Delta. From there he took the well-trod path to Chicago where he spent a year as minister of music in a Southside church. Soon after returning to Boston, he was bit by the songwriting bug and released his first full length album in 2008. Since then his trajectory has continued to rise, with a major-label record deal, tour dates on five continents and songs in film and television soundtracks. Now signed to Hillsborough-based Yep Roc Records, he’ll will be embarking on an extended tour through the heartland in March. We’re honored to have him live on WHUP!
