WHUP leads the nation in on-air live music sessions, and we have two more on the schedule featuring musicians from Texas and Georgia!
First, on Friday, April 22 at 4 pm, tune in for a spectacular double bill with Savannah-based swing jazz quintet Velvet Caravan and West Texas singer-songwriter Colin Gilmore. Both will be performing that night in an Earth Day house concert at Hillsborough Permaculture, and they’ve agreed to join us in the WHUP studios to promote the show. Velvet Caravan plays an eclectic and hard-driving collection of Gypsy, honky-tonk, swing and Latin tunes with a Southern flair in an energetic mix they call European redneck music. The band’s members, who hail from around the world, bring both brilliant technique and an incisive wit to their original sound.
Colin, the son of legendary singer-songwriter Jimmie Dale Gilmore, has his father’s knack for making lyrical incisions in the fabric of life and laying it bare. Often touring the world with full band, Colin will play a stripped-down solo set at WHUP.
The next morning at 10 am, WHUP presents a rare live-radio Kirtan music session courtesy of Atlanta artists Krishna & Gershone, who will be leading a Kirtan event in Hillsborough just a few hours later. A participatory combination of sacred singing and chanting in a variety of languages meant to bring peace, positivity & transcendentalism to participants, Kirtan is an ancient form of expression practiced around the world. Please join us for an hour of meditative music and learning!
