Like most public and community radio stations, WHUP holds an annual spring fund drive to help us pay the rent, keep the lights on, repair and replace equipment and otherwise keep the station on the air. This year, however, the magnitude of the needs in the community due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the uncertainty of the moment demanded more from us than our standard radio begathon. So in the spirit of community radio and consistent with our mission we have retooled our fundraiser as the WHUP 50/50 Event and will donate half the proceeds to support Hillsborough service industry workers who have been most affected by the shutdown.
The WHUP 50/50 Event will run from Sunday May 3 through Saturday May 9 and will help stoke the ongoing World’s Biggest Tip Jar campaign created jointly by the Wooden Nickel Pub and the Hillsborough/Orange County Chamber of Commerce. WHUP’s contributions to the Tip Jar will be matched by a local benefactor who challenged local businesses to support the these efforts. To date the campaign has raised more than $15,500.
During the shutdown WHUP has continued to deliver a diverse mix of news, public affairs programming and music with an emphasis on local. We are committed to providing essential information to the community throughout the course of the pandemic and also serve up Hillsborough and the Triangle as a model for other communities who want to know how good things can happen when people work together in times of crisis. Everyone in Hillsborough has been pulling together and helping each other stay afloat, and we’re just doing our part.
To donate to WHUP 50/50, please visit our donation page or mail a check to WHUP, 117 W. King St, Hillsborough NC 27278.
Thanks for your support of independent radio and especially those facing tough economic times in our community!
