For the last several years WHUP has been methodically building a digital collection of North Carolina music that will finally be unveiled beginning Monday, October 12 as part of 50/50 week. The collection spans the gamut of musical styles that showcase the breadth and depth of the state’s contributions to the annals of blues, jazz, country/bluegrass/old time, Americana, indie rock, punk and everything else imaginable. You’ll hear tracks from some of the most famous residents of the Tar Heel State as well as by folks who recorded just a single song! During the week we’ll be spinning more than 70 hours of NC tunes (!!) and will be adding dedicated North Carolina music hours to our schedule after that.
Compiling the digital files, which include thousands of tracks recorded by hundreds of Tar Heel artists, has been a labor of love involving multiple WHUP DJs who have pooled their resources and spent countless hours ripping vinyl and CDs to help build the collection. And we’ve folded in the music supplied by the many North Carolina artists who have played live on WHUP or sent us their hard copies for airplay.
The only way to access the music is by listening to the hours designated on our schedule as WHUPtunes, which play when we have no regularly scheduled show or live DJ in the studio. Though the library is huge it’s certainly not comprehensive, and we’ll be adding many more albums and tracks to it in the weeks, months and years ahead. If you’d like to help with the project, please contact us and let us know what you’ve got. Happy listening!
