Last fall WHUP made the unprecedented decision to share the revenue from our on-air fundraiser with Orange County musicians who were struggling to make ends meet during the pandemic. With the generous support of our friends and fans, the WHUP 50/50 Event generated more than $4,000 for our local musicians plus helped keep WHUP solvent into the new year. The positive response from the community inspired us to reprise that success by again splitting the proceeds from our Spring 50/50 Event with musicians in our home county to help see them through the next few months.
Today there is more optimism for an economic recovery in the arts, and government relief funds for venues and organizations are finally helping rescue them from the economic brink. But musicians and bands are still largely unable to perform live and must rely on unemployment checks or other jobs to pay the bills until clubs, concert halls and festivals are back in full gear. Your participation in our Spring 50/50 Event will help bridge that gap.
The WHUP 50/50 Event will run April 26–May 2; as we did in the fall, we’ll direct half the funds to musicians through the Orange County Arts Commission’s Arts Support Fund to help them cover basic expenses. Highlights include a batch of special guest DJ sessions throughout the week featuring local musicians sharing their favorite tunes. Visit our Facebook and Instagram pages for details and please consider making a donation to help our local musicians as well as WHUP to keep us motoring forward. Thanks!
