Ragged Gloryland is the place where roots, soul, and gospel music (ranging from vintage to just-out-today) hang out and play well together, peaking when the songs meet and meld into ragged, glorious country soul. Among the show’s patron saints – or, if you prefer, its Mount Rushmore – are Levon Helm, Mavis Staples, Dan Penn, and Allen Toussaint (with apologies to Etta James, Dave Alvin, Solomon Burke, and many other worthies). Recurring features include Saturday Night & Sunday Morning and Sounds Like the Band sets, and there’s live music in the studio whenever possible. So welcome to Ragged Gloryland, where the town anthem is the Staple Singers’ version of the Band’s “The Weight.”
